Reddit groups ban X links in protest at Musk arm gesture

More than 100 Reddit communities have banned users from posting links to X in protest at owner Elon Musk's controversial arm gesture at a rally celebrating Donald Trump's return to office.

The billionaire twice extended his arm out straight as he thanked the crowd for "making it happen."

Dozens of popular Reddit subreddits have begun to ban users from sharing links to X after the social network’s owner Elon Musk made a Nazi salute during his speech in honor of Donald Trump’s inauguration. This was reported by The Verge.

Meanwhile, popular gaming subreddits like r/PCGaming (3.8 million members) and r/destiny2 (910 thousand members) also followed suit. Members also discussed similar proposals in sports subreddits r/AnarchyChess (545 thousand members), r/CHIBears (376 thousand members) and r/NYYankees (383 thousand members). A poll on r/xmen (270 thousand members) on the topic received 7,500 votes in support of banning all content from X, including links and screenshots, making it the most popular option.

In many of the posts announcing the new rules, moderators specifically mentioned the salute incident, which took place at a rally following President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

“Last night, at Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and known alt-right personality, showed the world who he truly is, and performed a full Sieg Heil Nazi salute not once, but twice,” said the announcement post in the subreddit for “Destiny 2,” an online game, which has more than 900,000 members. “Here in r/destiny2, we do not tolerate Nazis. Anyone spouting Nazi ideology or hateful speech have, and always will be permanently banned on sight, without chance for appeal.”

The subreddit for London, Ont., announced Tuesday it would be banning all links to X, explaining to its 112,000 members, "We want to keep our space positive and inclusive, and we don't support platforms that promote hateful views."

The Formula 1 subreddit, with 4.8 million members, announced Wednesday that it was banning all X content. A proposal to ban X links by the Liverpool FC subreddit had nearly 40,000 upvotes at the time of publication, and moderators for the Chicago Bears group said they were discussing a "plan of action" after a similar proposal had 22,000 upvotes.
